An Estimated 1 Million Students to be Reached in Coming Year
Washington, DC—It’s February 2nd and the 10th Annual Job Shadow Day is kicking off year-round Job Shadow initiatives. Made possible by national title sponsor ING, Job Shadow is expected to provide one million teens with an up-close look at the world of work in the coming 12 months as they Job Shadow “career mentors” in their places of work.

Lodging Industry Supports Job Shadow (AH&LA)
The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is mobilizing the industry to participate in National Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2, 2007, and introduce young people to the more than 200 lodging career paths. With the lodging industry producing $122.7 billion in sales and employing 1.4 million hotel property workers in 2005, AH&LA is galvanizing its partner state associations and member properties to accomplish record participation in 2007’s “shadow” workplace experience.
National Apartment Association (NAA)
With the goal of helping to promote the apartment industry as a viable career choice, NAA members, through the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI), are encouraged to participate in Job Shadow Day on Feb. 2.The national program will allow employers to welcome high school students into their workplaces so the students can “shadow” workplace mentors to see and experience what working in their respective industries is all about.
Around the Country
Montgomery, AL
For the seventh consecutive year, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce will be partnering with Montgomery Public Schools, Partners in Education and businesses across the community to provide Job Shadow opportunities for 75 high school students. Two students will even have the opportunity to Job Shadow Alabama Governor Bob Riley.
Los Angeles, CA
More than 50 career counselors from over 30 area schools will participate in a first-of-its-kind forum, Flight Path to the Future, to learn about professional and technical aviation-related occupations and obtain tools and resources to guide students interested in these careers. The same day, more than 40 Sylmar High School students will “shadow” mentors who work for Van Nuys Airport (VNY) and VNY tenants. The counselors and students will meet up at a lunch. Sponsors of career counselor event: VNY, LA Unified School District and the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley.
Detroit, MI
Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan is partnering with several metro Detroit based companies to have their employees serve as one-day mentors to high school students beginning on February 2, 2007, National Groundhog Job Shadow Day. The purpose of the area-wide event is to encourage young people to see the connection between what they are learning in school and what skills are needed in the workplace.
New York, NY
Students from Junior Achievement of New York and representatives from ING will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on February 2nd as part of Job Shadow Day 2007. Some of the students will have the opportunity to Job Shadow Donny Deutsch, host of CNBC’s The Big Idea, as he spends the day working at his advertising firm.
Nashville, TN
On February 2nd, the 9th annual Music Row Job Shadow event will take place. Nearly 70 middle and high school students from Nashville will participate. Students will be off the sidelines and on the field to examine a future that puts them behind a desk, on the stage or in the spotlight.
Washington, DC
More than 500 area Junior Achievement students will be participating in a variety of Job Shadow experiences, including shadowing Chief Information Officers (CIOs) at dozens of Federal Agencies and high tech careers at Northern Virginia employers such as AOL, Boeing and Northrop Grumman. In addition, 600 students will Job Shadow at the Federal Aviation Administration where they will get a look at the FAA Operations Center, see a K-9 Demonstration and learn about the principles of flight.
National Job Shadow Day is a coordinated effort of America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, Junior Achievement, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor.
