The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Joins the National Job Shadow Day Coalition for Job Shadow Day 2006

Washington, DC—The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) has joined the National Job Shadow Coalition. As a partner in the coalition, ACTE will promote Job Shadow Day 2006 and other Job Shadow initiatives to its membership of career and technical education professionals.

Kicking off on February 2, 2006, Job Shadow Day is part of a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. Through Job Shadow ing, students are given the opportunity to go into places of work and shadow “career mentors,” volunteers who discuss their careers and the education and skills necessary to do them.

“The Job Shadow Coalition is extremely pleased to have ACTE as a partner in this effort,” said Mark Fiore, Executive Director of the Job Shadow Coalition. “Career and technical education professionals have worked with experiential learning models for years and understand how initiatives such as Job Shadow can lead to more in-depth educational experiences, including internships and apprenticeships. We look forward to working in tandem with ACTE members in the months and years ahead.”

“ACTE is pleased about partnering with the Job Shadow Coalition. This alliance will provide students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience, and gain first-hand insight into different interests and career options”, stated Janet Bray, Executive Director of ACTE. “Career and technical education programs across the country provide students with the academic and technical skills necessary to meet current workplace demands. Through Job Shadow ing, students are able to realize the connection between skills learned in the classroom and those demanded in the 21st century workplace.”

In its ninth year, national Job Shadow Day is a coordinated effort of America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, Junior Achievement, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor. National partners include the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA). ING is the national title sponsor of Job Shadow Day 2006. Valpak.com is a national co-sponsor.
