- Washington, DC—Friday, February 2, 2007, marks the 10th Annual National Job Shadow Day. The national event was first launched in 1998 by General Colin Powell and America’s Promise — The Alliance for Youth, Junior Achievement, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor as a way to give young people an up-close look at the world of work. Since then, the event has gone from reaching tens of thousands of students to an estimated one million teens a year. The 10th Annual National Job Shadow Day is made possible through the support of national title sponsor ING.

- First Lady Gayle C. Manchin fulfilled one of America’s Promise 5 Promises on Job Shadow Day by hosting Cameron Sansom. Cameron an eighth grade student at Barboursville Middle School, Barboursville, WV spent Job Shadow Day shadowing West Virginia First Lady Gayle C. Manchin.

- For First Time, Girls’ Salary Expectations Are On Par With Boys’, According To New Junior Achievement Poll
- Colorado Springs, Colo.—Continuing a three-year trend, results of the “2006 JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement) InterpriseT Poll on Kids and Careers” show salary expectations between boys and girls have narrowed. Since first being measured in the 2003 Interprise Poll, male salary expectations for most jobs exceeded earnings anticipated by female teens. In this year’s Interprise Poll, the seventh time this poll has been conducted, the highest earnings expectations for frequently-cited careers are split fairly evenly between the genders. Girls’ expectations to earn $250,000 or more were higher than boys’ for the career of businessperson (44.1 percent versus 38.9 percent), doctor (63.2 percent versus 41.7 percent), and teacher (9.5 percent versus 7.1 percent). Male students still held higher salary expectations for careers in entertainment (42.1 percent versus 38.5 percent), the computer field (38.1 percent versus 25 percent), and law (37.5 percent versus 34.8 percent).

- Washington, DC—On Tuesday, January 17th, two Junior Achievement students from the Los Angeles-area will Job Shadow John Walsh in L.A. as he tapes that week’s episode of America’s Most Wanted. John Walsh is hosting the teenagers as part of his support of Job Shadow Day 2006, for which he also shot a Public Service Announcement (PSA).

- Washington, DC (February 1, 2005)—Starting on February 2, 2005, more than one million young people will have a chance to explore their futures when they “shadow” workplace mentors as part of the eighth annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day initiative.

- Colorado Springs, Colo.— For the third consecutive year, teens selected a career in business as their ideal job, according to a new JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement) “Interprise PollTM.” “Business” occupations received 9.7 percent of the responses, “doctor” and “teacher” each received 6.2 percent, and “entertainer” received 5.7 percent.
- Teens Say “Being Happy” is the American Dream, Not Being “Rich and Famous” or “Owning My Own Business” in New Poll
- Washington, DC (January 12, 2005)— According to a new poll from the Job Shadow Coalition and Harris Interactive, nearly half of teens surveyed (47%) defined the American Dream as “Simply Being Happy, No Matter What you Do,” far outpacing “Being Rich and/or Famous,” which was identified by one-in-five teens (20%) and “Owning My Own Business,” which was identified by only 7 percent of teens. The poll of 644 teens was conducted in December 2004 and has a margin of error of +/- 4%.

Nelnet, one of the leading educational finance companies in the United States, has agreed to co-sponsor Job Shadow Day on February 2, 2005. Groundhog Job Shadow Day is a nationwide mentoring opportunity for students to “shadow” adults at their workplace for a day, gaining valuable first-hand knowledge of the world of business. - Nearly 80 Percent of Teens Not Interested in Following in their Parents’ Career Footsteps
- Washington, DC (January 27, 2004)—There once was a time when a son or daughter was expected to follow in their parents’ occupational footsteps. However, things have changed significantly since those days. A new Junior Achievement poll of 1,000 teens between the ages of 13 and 18 shows that 78 percent of teens say they are not interested in following in their parents’ career paths, up from 76 percent last year. From a gender standpoint, 82.5 percent of girls were not interested, while 76.1 percent of boys were not interested. The poll was conducted in October and November of 2003.

- Washington, DC (January 22, 2004)—The Job Shadow Coalition estimates one million students across the country will participate in the 7th Annual Job Shadow Initiative beginning on February 2nd; Groundhog Day.
- Poll Shows Majority of Teens Not Interested in Fastest-Growing Jobs
- Washington, DC, (January 12, 2004)—A new poll shows that more than half (51%) of teens have no interest in pursuing the top five fastest-growing career fields, which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has determined will have critical workforce needs in this decade and beyond. Those who were interested in these careers preferred the higher paying, higher education-requiring “computer and data processing” (25%) and “healthcare” (21%) fields over lower paying fields such as “residential care” (1%), “cable and pay television services” (1%), and “personnel services” (1%). The scientific poll of 642 teens between the ages of 13 and 17 was conducted in December 2003 by the Job Shadow Coalition and Harris Interactive.
- HogQuest! New Online Scavenger Hunt from Jobshadow.org!
- Washington, DC (December 8, 2003)—The Job Shadow Coalition is launching a new online “scavenger hunt” called HogQuest. From now until February 2, 2004, virtually anyone can search for “career-focused groundhogs” hidden throughout the Internet by answering a series of riddles at jobshadow.org. Once a participant solves a riddle and finds one of these groundhogs, they can register for a chance to win a gift certificate from Amazon.com.

- Washington, DC (December 2, 2003)—Thousands of teens from across the country will be able to explore various careers via the Internet as part of a new initiative. The Job Shadow Coalition, in partnership with Career Corner TV, is launching Virtual Job Shadow on the www.jobshadow.org site.

- Washington, DC, (November 5, 2003)—Since 9/11 and the start of the War on Terror, many have assumed that America’s young people are now more likely to consider serving their country through careers in politics or the military. But nearly 80 percent of teens say recent events have had no impact in this area, according to a poll of 654 teens between the ages of 13 and 18 conducted by the Job Shadow Coalition and Harris Interactive. The demographically weighted poll took place between October 10 and 24, 2003.
