AT&T Commits to Five-Year Job Shadow Initiative

AT&T, the world’s largest communications company, is partnering with JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement) over five years to support the AT&T/Junior Achievement Job Shadow Initiative. Through this initiative, AT&T will reach 100,000 students across the United States, representing an investment of more than $5.5 million and approximately 400,000 employee hours. The AT&T initiative is the largest corporate job-shadowing program Junior Achievement has ever undertaken.

In this comprehensive effort, AT&T will work closely with local Junior Achievement operations to set up job shadow opportunities between AT&T employees and students at AT&T facilities across the country.

Job Shadow Works!

According to a new evaluation being conducted by JA Worldwide, nearly nine-in-ten students (86%) who have participated in job shadow programs say they feel more prepared for the workplace as a result of their job shadow activities.

More About Job Shadow 2008

Job Shadow 2008 is a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace.

In its new role, AT&T will actively work with the Job Shadow Coalition to set up job shadow opportunities between AT&T employees and students. This will be a comprehensive effort that will involve several of the company’s major facilities across the country.

The National Job Shadow Coalition encourages young people across the country to explore their futures through career awareness and mentoring opportunities. Formed in 1998, the coalition includes America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement), the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the newest member, AT&T. The national title sponsor is the Best Buy Children’s Foundation. Other sponsors include Cisco; the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice; and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
