Job Shadow News from Across the Country!

Georgia

On March 6, students from Westlake High School in Atlanta job shadowed several professionals at a Julian LeCraw-managed apartment community. Students had an opportunity to see what goes into managing, leasing and maintaining a community. During the event, Julian LeCraw Partner Michael Tompkins took a few moments to meet with the students and discuss their career aspirations. The event was made possible by Junior Achievement of Georgia.

North Carolina

In February, Communities In Schools of Randolph County, NC with its partners, the Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Archdale-Trinity, held its 5th annual Job Shadow Day for 8th graders at Archdale-Trinity Middle School. Forty-two area businesses hosted 65 students allowing them to job shadow an employee for a portion of the day. Opportunities included a veterinarian, a chiropractor, local city government officials, principals, insurance agents, realtors, banks, a local bakery, fire department, police, and the Family Crisis Center.

Nevada

On Friday, February 1, the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) had 14 local high school students join them at Diamond Peak Ski Resort and the Incline Village Recreation Center. The Lake Tahoe, Nevada location provided students with opportunities to see how education and recreation can compliment future career opportunities. This was IVGID’s sixth year of participation.

Washington (State)

Curlew, Washington Job Corps participated in Job Shadow 2008 by students shadowing staff. Medical Office students shadowed at the local hospital and clinic, facility maintenance students shadowed at the local hospital and Housing Authority. Job Corps bricklayers took a field trip to the Spokane Local training center, where they spent the day talking to apprentices and journeyman bricklayers.

More About Job Shadow 2008

Job Shadow 2008 is a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace.

The National Job Shadow Coalition encourages young people across the country to explore their futures through career awareness and mentoring opportunities. Formed in 1998, the coalition includes America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement), the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Labor.
