Associations Gear up for Job Shadow Day 2007
A host of professional associations are gearing up for Job Shadow Day 2007. Some, such as American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), have been involved with Job Shadow Day since its inception. Others, such as the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), are expanding their involvement dramatically in 2007, encouraging members across the country to take an active role in the initiative by reaching out to local schools and partners, such as Junior Achievement. Here are just a few examples:
- Lodging Industry Supports Job Shadow (AH&LA)
- The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is mobilizing the industry to participate in National Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 2, 2007, and introduce young people to the more than 200 lodging career paths. With the lodging industry producing $122.7 billion in sales and employing 1.4 million hotel property workers in 2005, AH&LA is galvanizing its partner state associations and member properties to accomplish record participation in 2007’s “shadow” workplace experience.
- Federal Chief Information Officers (CIOs) Set for Job Shadow Day
- The Federal Chief Information Officer Council is participating in Job Shadow Day on February 1, 2007. High school students will follow government IT employees around for a day to observe their jobs. The student shadows are being arranged through Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area. Organizers expect about 200 students to participate in the event.
- National Apartment Association (NAA)
- With the goal of helping to promote the apartment industry as a viable career choice, NAA members, through the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI), are encouraged to participate in Job Shadow Day on Feb. 2.The national program will allow employers to welcome high school students into their workplaces so the students can “shadow” workplace mentors to see and experience what working in their respective industries is all about.

About Job Shadow Day
Job Shadow is a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace. National Job Shadow is a coordinated effort of Junior Achievement, America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor. National partners include the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). For more information, visit www.JobShadow.org.
