Job Shadow Day 2005 a Great Success!

Job Shadow Day 2005 was a tremendous success! On February 2nd, young people from across the country Job Shadow ed “career mentors” in their places of work. Thousands of employers participated, including ING, Buca di Beppo, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, AOL, GE, Marriott, Starwood Hotels and Orbital Sciences. On the public sector front, several government agencies were also involved, including the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Federal Aviation Administration, Job Corps, Ramstein Air Force Base (Germany), the Small Business Administration and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In addition, many prominent associations, including the American Hotel and Lodging Association, the National Association of Workforce Boards and the Society for Human Resource Management, encouraged their membership to become involved in Job Shadow Day 2005!

New York State of Mind

Once again, Job Shadow Day was featured prominently on many of the morning news programs coming out of New York City on February 2nd. Arranged by Junior Achievement of New York, teens shadowed the casts and crews of the TODAY Show, the View, Regis and Kelly and a variety of national and local television programs produced in New York.

Mr. Groundhog Goes to Washington

More than a dozen members of Congress saw their student shadows in Washington, DC on February 2nd. Junior Achievement Worldwide matched students from home states and districts with the offices of Senators and Congressmen from both sides of the aisle. Participating lawmakers included Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss and Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu. In addition to meeting and speaking with the lawmakers, students were able to Job Shadow their staffs to see what it is like to work on Capitol Hill as it prepares for the President’s State of the Union Address, which occurred that evening. In addition to the Junior Achievement effort, Job Corps also had young people on the Hill as part of the organization’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao was also a prominent Administration participant in this year’s effort.
