Job Shadow Day is Less than Two Weeks Away!
Job Shadow Day is just around the corner! As you get ready for your event, here are just a few of the Job Shadow activities being planned around the country!
Job Shadow Day in the News
From the Berkshire Eagle [Pittsfield, MA): The Berkshire County Regional Employment Board is giving support to Job Shadow 2005, a nationwide mentoring initiative that pairs students with professionals in the workplace. The BCREB invites businesses across Berkshire County to give high school students a behind-the-scenes look at what the business does and how they do it.
On Wednesday, Feb. 2, in conjunction with Groundhog Job Shadow Day, the BCREB along with the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts, will kickoff Job Shadow 2005, a year-long initiative to host local high school students in the workplace with a goal of having 1,000 students from area schools participate this year.
- From the Kodiak Daily Mirror (Kodiak, AK): In an effort to connect what students learn in school with real-life career applications, Kodiak High School students will participate in Job Shadow Day, a growing national event that kicks off on Groundhog Day Feb. 2. Just as the groundhog pops out of his cozy burrow and checks the weather to determine his future plans, the event challenges students to take a glimpse into their own future and think about the careers they are interested in pursuing. KHS students regularly have the opportunity to Job Shadow different occupations at the local Coast Guard Base, but KHS Career Pathways coordinator Leslie Soughers is looking for local Kodiak businesses to also volunteer to sponsor students for Job Shadow Day.
Job Shadow Around the Country
- New Mexico
- Junior Achievement of New Mexico will reach more than 500 students on February 2, 2005, as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2005. Students will shadow city and state officials, local broadcasters, major businesses and local employers.
- Pittsburg, KS
- Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, Kansas, is getting ready to participate for the seventh year in National Job Shadow Day on February 9. Each year approximately 150 students spend the morning at a Job Shadow site; many have lunch with their hosts. The Pittsburg Area Business Education Alliance and USD 250 School District cooperate in sponsoring this event. Shadowing hosts participating include Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center and other health services, Pittsburg State University, Superior Industries International, Vinylplex, Van Becelaere Machine Shop, JC Penney, Miller’s Professional Imaging, Crossland Construction, the City of Pittsburg and various banks and financial institutions. The students have a folder of assignments to complete as a part of the Job Shadow activity, which they hand in to their English teachers.
- Lincoln, NE
- The Nebraska State Bar Foundation and the Nebraska Supreme Court will cosponsor the third annual Law Day Job Shadow for fifth graders during the week leading up to Law Day, May 1. The purpose of the program is to encourage the students to work hard and stay in school.
- Groups of fifth graders spend one hour with lawyers, judges, or other professionals such as police or sheriff officers, court clerks, or court reporters. They experience some of the day-to-day activity of these professionals and observe their relationship to both criminal and civil laws. Legal professionals may carry out a mock trial demonstration or engage the students in some other type of experiential activity such as writing a simple contract or a will. The sponsors also provide suggested activities that relate to the annual Law Day theme as established by the American Bar Association. The Law Day theme for 2005 is “The American Jury: We the People in Action.”
