Job Shadow Day: E-Extra!
January 6, 2005
Goodbye Holidays, Hello Hog Day!
Now that the holidays are behind us, plans are in full swing for Job Shadow Day 2005!
Road Hogs!
Keep your ears peeled the last two weeks of January. For the first time ever, you will hear hogs on morning traffic reports. Through the generous support of ING and Nelnet, traffic radio reports across the country will feature information on Job Shadow Day 2005. Working through Metro Networks, local traffic reporters in several cities will include details about Job Shadow Day in their regular traffic reports! It brings a whole new meaning to the term “hogging the road.”
Hog-A-Day Cards
Before the holidays you may have received an electronic postcard about Job Shadow Day. If you did not receive this card, or would like to forward it to friends or colleagues, just visit www.jobshadow.org/postcard/.
Job Shadow In the News
- Hong Kong
- From the South China Morning Post: Junior Achievement Hong Kong (JAHK) has organized Job Shadow Day to give young teenagers an idea about the relevance of education to the workplace. Airline catering company LSG Lufthansa Service Hong Kong will next month host a group of teenagers from a cross-section of local schools. Students will be assigned to an employee and “shadow” a workplace mentor as they experience a typical day on the job. Last summer, JAHK sent 20 students to CLP where they shadowed engineers. Others went to Federal Express and saw how station managers take responsibility for the movement of packages. Another group worked with Fed Ex brand advisers.
- Lansing, MI
- From the Lansing State Journal: Eighty-four eighth-grade students from Gardner Middle School attended a one-day Job Shadow program December 4th at Michigan State University. The Lansing School District, Junior Achievement and MSU worked together to help students interact with Michigan State University employees in many different areas. The Lansing School District and Junior Achievement are planning four more Job Shadow days for 400 students in Lansing before June 1.
Effective Practices from the Hog Blog: Working with Small Businesses When arranging Job Shadow trips, many organizers try to work with larger employers so that an entire busload of students can make one trip. For many communities, this is the ideal model. But what do you do if you live in a community where there a few, if any, large employers? Find out more about this and other Effective Practices by visiting the Hog Blog
Defining the American Dream
A new poll from the Job Shadow Coalition and Harris Interactive will be released next week. It will feature teens’ attitudes about the American Dream and the role of education in obtaining it. Look for more details next week!

About Job Shadow Day
Job Shadow is a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace. National Job Shadow is a coordinated effort of Junior Achievement, America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor.
