Job Shadow Featured on BET Nightly News

Did you know that African-American teens are the most optimistic about achieving their ideal job? This is the case, according to a Junior Achievement poll promoted in conjunction with the Job Shadow Coalition. The poll, along with Job Shadow Coalition Director Dr. Stuart Shapiro and a Junior Achievement class from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC, were featured on BET Nightly News on Friday, March 26th. Shadows Across America!

Nevada
The Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing &Visual Arts arranged for 60 high school seniors to participate in Job Shadow Day. In all, more than 200 shadows were arranged by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Shadows included coroners, pediatric surgeons, paramedics, financial planners, the attorney general’s office, the Nevada film office, the understudy cast of “Mama Mia,” the Venetian Hotel &Casino, and the Blue Man Group, to name a few.
North Carolina
The Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce of Roanoke Rapids, NC, coordinated its seventh annual Groundhog Day on February 10. One hundred 8th grade students from area schools were matched with business professionals who worked in fields selected by the middle graders. Careers shadowed included local policemen, firemen, educators, lawyers, hospital personnel, small business owners, architects, and more. Sixty different sites in the community participated.
Washington, DC
The Washington, DC Veteran Administration Medical Center participated with two high schools in Washington, D.C.; Mary Margaret Washington Career High School and Benjamin Banneker Academic High School. The center had a total of 22 high school students who Job Shadow ed professionals in careers such as Pharmacy, Medical, Nursing, Police, Surgical, etc.
Three Mount Vernon High School students visited the headquarters of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C. on February 1. Fairfax County Public Schools supports career experiences for students such as Job Shadow ing.

Virtual Job Shadow Adds Member of Congress

On March 8th, U.S. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez joined the ranks of Virtual Job Shadow mentors! In her fourth term in Congress, Representative Sanchez is one of the most prominent Hispanic women in the country. She represents the California 47th Congressional District, which encompasses the Southern California cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana and Fullerton in Orange County. Congresswoman Sanchez is the ranking woman of the House Armed Services Committee and serves as the third-ranking Democrat of the Select Committee for Homeland Security.
