- California
- On February 2, 2004 businesses from the San Fernando Valley (SFV) came out of their burrow and supported Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Every year for the past six years, Boeing has participated in the Job Shadow program to bring in minority children of all ages to “shadow” adults in the work place. Boeing sponsored twenty minority students from Canoga Park High School to learn about how NASA communicates and tracks the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle. Another company who hosted minority students was Van Nuys Airport.
- Georgia
- Junior Achievement of Georgia celebrated Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2004 with a kick-off event at The Carter Center on February 2nd. Over 450 students and members from host companies gathered at The Carter Center at 9:00 a.m. to begin a unique day of hands-on experiences. Employees of Turner Broadcasting, BellSouth, Cingular Wireless and PriceWaterhouseCoopers mentored more than 200 Junior Achievement students.
- Illinois
- Pinckneyville Community High School Students received an up-close look at how the skills they learn in school are put into action in the workplace. Murphy-Wall State Bank welcomed seven (7) Pinckneyville Community High School students on Thursday, February 12, 2004, giving them a behind the scenes look at what a bank does during a normal business day. The shadows got a sense of what the “real world” holds in store for them, and what it’s like to be member of the Murphy-Wall State Bank work family.
- Iowa
- Iowa Senators and Representatives participated in Job Shadow Day on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 by hosting Iowa high school students at the Capitol in Des Moines. The event was sponsored by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. Ninety-six students from numerous Iowa high schools experienced how the skills they learn in school are put into action in the legislative workplace. Diplomacy, compromise, strategy, listening skills and teamwork were seen in action as legislators guided their “shadows” through a normal day of attending committee meetings, listening to floor debate, sharing with lobbyists, studying the issues, and voting on legislation.
- Washington, D.C.
- On February 2, Junior Achievement students from three high schools in the greater Washington D.C. area participated. Workplace hosts included John Derrick, Chairman of PEPCO, and Ann Compton, White House Correspondent from ABC News. JA also had students with all four of the TV network affiliates as they shadowed their meteorologists. Also participating were Ridgewells, a local catering firm and The Jefferson Hotel, a longtime Washington institution. The opportunities continued on February 10 and 11 when students participated in a Job Shadow experience at the FDIC, including shadowing Chairman Donald E. Powell. As the program grows, other great opportunities for students are planned, including Best Buy, the Redskins, DC United, the Undersecretary of the Treasury, and even the Pentagon.
