Job Shadow Day: E-Extra!

Between the SuperBowl Sunday and Super Tuesday is Super Job Shadow Day on Monday, February 2nd!
Plans are in place for the kick-off of the most successful Job Shadow initiative ever! Starting February 2nd, one million students will experience Job Shadow through the yearlong Job Shadow initiative!
Here’s a Look at What’s Happening!
- Arizona
- On Monday, Feb. 2, Groundhog Day, approximately 30 eighth graders from Oak Creek School in Cornville, AZ will be out in the community to experience an average work day in the career field of their choice. Many local businesses and professionals in the area have opened their doors to allow our students this unique experience.
- Georgia
- Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia will be sponsoring 45 students from Dougherty County Comprehensive High School and 15 students from Worth County High for Job Shadow day on Feb 3, 2004. The students from Dougherty High are a part of the Jobs for Georgia Graduates program, sponsored by the Department of Labor at the school. The Logistics Base is conducting the Job Shadow day in an effort to expand the relationship between the Base and our community high schools and to possibly broaden the students’ outlook on the job market.
- New Jersey
- Seven state government agencies in New Jersey’s capitol of Trenton will host over 100 students throughout the week of February 2. In addition, the NJ Secretary of State’s office is expecting to host 11 students. Groundhog Job Shadow Day has also received the support of the New Jersey Hotel/Motel Association, The New Jersey Restaurant Association, the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers and the New Jersey Association of Black Female Lawyers. Other participating employers include the following: McGuire AFB, Ft. Dix military base, Burlington County College, Deborah Heart & Lung, Pemberton Township Municipal Building, C-Tech Toyota, TGIFridays, Sheraton and Hilton. Our goal is to sponsor shadowing opportunities for more than 15,000 students this year.
- Pennsylvania
- Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania is placing 169 students from 12 high schools across 4 counties with 55 employers, including three members of the American Hotel & Lodging Association - Skytop Lodge, Radisson Lackawanna Station, and Shawnee Inn & Resort. Students are shadowing at local colleges & universities, hospitals, banks, the Chamber of Commerce, small businesses, large corporations, the American Red Cross, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and the offices of Senator Robert Mellow, Senator Ray Musto, and Senator Rick Santorum.
- Rhode Island
- This year the Rhode Island School to Career Office and Junior Achievement Rhode Island of RI, Inc. collaborated with the Rhode Island Health Partnership Council to showcase careers in the health field. One hundred Roger Williams Middle School students will shadow over one hundred healthcare professionals at Rhode Island Hospital after a welcoming ceremony featuring the Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, Charles J. Fogarty. The Industry Field Coordinators have also arranged Job Shadow s at Fidelity Investments, Cox Communications. G-Tech, Unicom, Hasbro, Blount Seafood, Fort Wetheril Aquatic Research Center, Blue Grotto, TGIF Fridays, Angelo’s Restaurant, Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Airport Hotel, Ten Prime Steak & Sushi and Hardwood Designs.
- South Carolina
- Thirty-five Broome High School seniors in Spartanburg will observe the “real world” work place on Monday, February 2, 2004. The experience will encourage student career exploration in several fields: government (county/city), education (elementary - university), medical/emergency, sports, retail, distribution, transportation, services, manufacturing, computer/technical services, restaurant, publishing and more.
- Tennessee
- Students from the Leadership Putnam Youth Academy in Cookeville, TN will participate in Job Shadow on Ground Hog Day. Participating employers include Clear Channel Communications, JC Penney, Lamar, and various local professionals, including doctors, attorneys, and public relations counselors.
